This article examines, based on archival sources, the little-known origins of the project of a «Lex Ecclesiae Fundamentalis» during Vatican II. It has been proven beyond doubt that the German Professor Klaus Mörsdorf was the originator of the idea to elaborate such a «LEF». In addition, in the phase of intense public debate following the leaked publication of the textus emendatus, two groups of German canon lawyers tried to contribute to the project of the «LEF» by means of two alternative drafts to the Roman scheme.
