A description of the European regulatory framework for data protection shapes the analysis of the general decree issued by the Spanish Episcopal Conference. The way in which the canonical norm mimics civil law is critiqued. Three key points of the text are analyzed : the subjective scope of application, the lack of adequate canonical definition of the person responsible and the person in charge of procedures, and the planned regulatory framework for the data protection officer.
