Abstract

This article analyzes the compulsoriness of clerical garb, starting from an examination of its placement within both canonical tradition and the current normative logic. Such a historical analysis indicates a progressive differentiation in clerical dress, the consolidation of the canonical custom, and the affirmation and defense of integrity and decorum in the dress of sacred ministers. An examination of current regulations demonstrates the orientation and development of the rationality of the system, and its resoluteness and determination as concerns the restoration of justice. The article then proceeds to consider three principal elements: 1) the essence and reach of the obligation ; 2) some cases of doubt (considering the foundation of and motivation behind the requirement), i.e. that of seminarians and permanent deacons ; and 3) the appropriate attitude on the part of the community, and possible solutions in the case of non-observance.
